We all want health and happiness. We spend our time on those things that we think will get us there. Everyone has a different idea on what path will get us there. But, did you know Science has made great discoveries on the key to increased health and happiness? After 80 years of research they were surprised to discover that the greatest determination of health and happiness later in our life can be predicted by the stability of our relationships at a younger age. Surprised?

The problem…

We are not likely to wake up every morning surprised at how stable all the relationships in our lives are, just like no one wakes up one day and is surprised to find out that they can run a marathon, or are being considered for CEO, or that they can play the violin and speak a new language. These huge achievements come from deliberate, daily, application of time and energy. On the other hand, how many of us wake up to the shock of police at their door with their child who was caught with drugs, or a serving of divorce papers, or any other relationship tragedy that seems to come from nowhere? How many feel too distant from their children and don’t know how to bridge the gap, or were to distracted to even realize that they should be noticing what is happening in the relationships around them?

No one who has achieved success in any sphere of their life has done so by fluke. Why would we expect our relationships to be any different? But we only have 24 hours in a day. Each day is a rush to reach the next deadline, get that promotion, shuttle kids between each activity and a million other mundane activities that never end. We know we need to exercise more/plan healthier meals/find a way to earn more money, and so the most important thing in our lives gets neglected; our relationships.  We hope that it will just stay strong. That it will keep getting stronger. Even as we keep it unintentionally in the background while we remain distracted by the busyness of life.

“Close relationships, more than money or fame, are what keep people happy throughout their lives, the study revealed. Those ties protect people from life’s discontents, help to delay mental and physical decline, and are better predictors of long and happy lives than social class, IQ, or even genes. That finding proved true across the board among both the Harvard men and the inner-city participants.” Harvard.edu
